❓5 Questions Before Choosing a Martial Arts School

Choosing a martial arts school is a chance to find a class that fits your child and your family's routine. A useful visit gives you more than a tour: it lets you ask specific questions, see how instruction works, and understand what enrollment involves.

These five questions can help you compare schools without relying only on advertising or a single review. Bring your child's questions, too. Their comfort with the instructor and the class is part of the decision.

1. Who will teach my child, and what is their experience?

Ask about the instructor's training, credentials, and experience teaching your child's age group. A rank or competition record tells you something about training, but watching a lesson helps you understand how that experience becomes instruction.

During a visit, notice how the instructor explains an unfamiliar movement, gives feedback, and includes beginners. Ask who normally leads the class and how students are grouped by age or experience. If your child needs additional support, discuss that with the academy before deciding whether the class is a suitable fit.

USTMA's instructor page introduces Grandmaster Eung Gil Choi and the instructors at the Leesburg and Berryville academies.

2. Can we experience a class before enrolling?

Ask how the school introduces new families. Find out whether a visit includes observing, participating, or speaking with an instructor, and what you need to arrange in advance. A trial is most useful when you know which class your child will attend and what to expect on arrival.

Look at the practical details as well as the activities. Can your family make the journey regularly? Does the class environment feel comfortable? Do you know whom to ask if your child is unsure what to do?

USTMA offers a free trial week for new students. Submit a request and the academy will help confirm your first visit. The first-visit guide explains how to prepare.

3. What does enrollment include, and what are the terms?

Before enrolling, ask for the current price and written terms. Different programs may have different schedules, equipment needs, and enrollment arrangements. Make sure you understand the program you are considering rather than assuming that an offer applies to every class.

  • What tuition or other fees apply to this program?
  • Are uniforms, equipment, or testing charged separately?
  • Is there a minimum term, renewal, or notice requirement?
  • What happens if we need to pause or cancel?
  • Which classes can a student attend?

Give yourself time to read the answers. A free trial and the terms of a later paid enrollment are separate things; ask about both. For USTMA program and enrollment questions, start with the parent FAQ or contact your preferred academy.

4. How do you help a beginner who is struggling?

Children respond differently to a new activity. Ask what an instructor does when a student is confused, frustrated, hesitant to join, or distracting others. Specific examples of the school's approach are more useful than a general promise about discipline or confidence.

You can also ask how parents should communicate concerns and whether there is a suitable time to speak after class. During a visit, observe how corrections are delivered and how students are helped to try again. Avoid assuming that one class will predict every future experience.

5. What can current families tell us?

Reviews can highlight subjects worth asking about, such as communication, instruction, or the experience of a particular age group. Read several reviews and note their dates. An individual family's experience may differ from yours.

If you have an opportunity to talk with current families, ask practical questions: what helped their child settle in, how they fit classes into the week, and how the academy handles questions. Then compare those answers with what you observed and what matters to your family.
